[Part 1]Kali Linux Basics: The installation of Kali Linux and VMWare Workstation Player
What we will learn? Let’s me think about it. Here in this topic, will share with everyone about Installing VMWare/Kali Linux and Kali Linux overview. This will be a very simple installation and introduction to Kali Linux. Learning Kali Linux for the education purpose. VMWare is a virtualization software and we going to run Kali Linux inside VMWare.
Actually, we have two ways to run Kali Linux. We can either run Kali Linux through a virtual machine or we can install it as a operating system on a hard drive. However, for this course and this lesson, we will be using a virtual machine and preferably we’re going to use VMWare Workstation Player.
Installation of VMWare Workstation Player
First, we need to install a software called VMWare Workstation Player annd let’s dive in to it. Now, let’s google it and click into the website: https://www.vmware.com/my/products/workstation-player/workstation-player-evaluation.html .
Here, we can choose to download the software for the Windows OS or Linux OS. In this lesson, the VMWare workstation player will be running on top of the Windows. If you are installing for Linux that’s fine as well, you just need to follow the instructions and default options for your following respective OS.
After finish downloading the installer, you just have to run it and follow the default options for the ease of installation.
Click on the Enhanced keyboard Driver in order to use the features that are necessary later on.
Unchecked the both options because it is not necessary unless you are interested in it. Then, you can check the options according to your preferences.
After the installation is finished, your machine is required to reboot/restart for the configuration changes needed to be made to the software.
Choose to use VMWare Workstation Player for free (education purpose).
The installation is now finish and the menu of the VMWare Workstation Player is illustrated in the figure above.
Installation of Kali Linux
Now, let’s move on to installing Kali Linux in our VMWare Workstation Player. Then, we actually need virtual machine to actually be able to try with it. This section going to be based on Kali Linux.
Another alternatives for Kali Linux is Parrot OS and more information can be found in the website: https://parrotlinux.org . In addtion, you can set up a OS with tool that you like(custom build).
After this, we can download the virtual machine at the official website: https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/#1572305786534-030ce714-cc3b
In this lesson, we will choose the Kali Linux VMWare 64-bit to run in our VMWare Workstation Player. You can either download it directly or download a torrent according to your own preferences. The file size is 2.1GB so it might take some time to download it depending on your internet speed. The website also provide the SHA256Sum if you want to check the file when you download it.
After finish downloading it,the file will appeared as a zip file. Now,extract the file to any places according to your preferences but make sure that there is enough space to store the file.
Then, we gonna select file and open options in the VMWare Workstation Player.
Select and open the file that we just extracted (the one file that are appeared to e supported).
Now, we have the automatically build that are ready to go. We don’t have to download the image itself then install it and pick all the features.
By selecting edit virtual machine setting, there are couple of setting that you can modify with. If you want to run faster, i’m going to recommend 4GB of ram out of 8GB of total ram (Obviously the more ram is selected, the better the machine is going to perform).
Click on “Play Virtual Machine” in VMWare main menu, then the Kali Linux is started up. In addition, the default username and password for the latest version of Kali Linux: username= kali / password=kali.
Kali Linux is now successfully logged in.
To be continued… and there are more to be discuss on.
